Achnatherum robustum – sleepygrass
This beautiful, tall bunchgrass can add structure and season-long visual interest to gardens and is a hardy restoration plant. While the sedative effects that give the grass its name are restricted to a small portion of its population in Cloudcroft, New Mexico, in an abundance of caution we don’t recommend the plant for pastures with grazing livestock.
Description
Growing Conditions
Drought tolerant. Prefers well draining soil and full sun to part shade.
Height
To 7 feet.
Ecology
Sleepygrass can harbor endophytic fungi which produce alkaloid compounds that make it tolerant to insect herbivores. In restricted populations near Cloudcroft, NM, the fungal symbionts create high levels of alkaloids that cause sedation and weakness in livestock, giving the species its common name.
