Bouteloua gracilis – blue grama
Colorado’s state grass! Bouteloua gracilis is also known as eyelash grass due to its distinctive inflorescence.
Description
Growing Conditions
Very drought tolerant. Prefers well draining soils and full sun, but can tolerate part shade. This species will spread vegetatively, though not aggressively.
Height
To 2 feet.
Ecology
Bouteloua gracilis is a significant part of native grassland ecosystems in our region. It is palatable to livestock and wildlife. Native grasses are also an important component of pollinator habitat, as they provide nesting sites for native bees and are the larval host plant of many butterfly and moth species.
